PROGRAM OVERVIEW & CONTEXT
In 2025, Yemen’s education sector is facing a worsening crisis as years of conflict, economic decline, and climate-related disasters continue to erode access to learning. The impact is particularly severe in Yemen, where poverty, widespread displacement, and the deterioration of school infrastructure have made safe and inclusive education increasingly difficult for children to obtain. Across the governorates, frequent clashes, combined with recurrent floods and landslides in areas such as Ad Dali’ and Taizz and Marib, have repeatedly disrupted schooling and caused significant damage to educational facilities. These conditions contribute to the nationwide rise in out-of-school children, which reached 4.5 million in 2025—up from 4.1 million in 2024 (Education Cluster 2025).
The Issue: The Challenge We Face
Years of protracted conflict, economic collapse, and recurring climate-related emergencies have severely disrupted education in Yemen, leaving millions of children without safe and quality learning opportunities. Thousands of schools have been damaged, destroyed, or repurposed as shelters for displaced families or for non-educational uses, while those that remain operational often lack basic facilities, learning materials, and qualified teachers. Education has become inaccessible for many, particularly in conflict-affected areas, for displaced children, and for those in vulnerable host communities.
Currently, over two million school-aged children are out of school, and millions more attend irregularly or receive poor-quality education. Teachers frequently face delayed or unpaid salaries, resulting in high absenteeism and attrition, which undermines learning continuity. Children learning in unsafe or overcrowded environments are exposed to protection risks, including harassment, exploitation, and the negative effects of psychosocial stress. The Education Cluster in Yemen prioritizes interventions to restore access to safe, inclusive, and quality education, provide essential learning materials, rehabilitate damaged classrooms, support teacher incentives, and address the specific needs of vulnerable and displaced children to ensure continuity of learning and protection.

Main Objective:Â Enable safe and equitable access to quality learning for crisis-affected girls and boys by providing learning materials, supporting teachers, and delivering emergency education services.
Objective 1: Provide immediate access to safe, inclusive, and protective learning environments for crisis-affected children and youth, delivering relevant learning opportunities and promoting attendance and retention.
Objective 2: Ensure at-risk and affected populations have timely access to culturally appropriate, age- and gender-sensitive information and interventions to prevent and respond to violence, exploitation, abuse, neglect, and harmful practices.
Objective 3: Restore learning in equitable, safe, and protective educational settings that support the physical, psychosocial, and cognitive well-being of crisis-affected children and youth.
Who We Help
Target Beneficiaries
Our education programs prioritize children and youth whose learning has been disrupted by conflict and crises, in line with Education Cluster Yemen priorities. This includes out-of-school children, particularly girls, students from low-income households who cannot afford school supplies, and displaced children living in IDP camps or host communities. Programs also focus on children with disabilities requiring inclusive education support, returnee students, and those attending schools that lack basic facilities, learning materials, and qualified teachers. By targeting these groups, the programs aim to restore access to safe, inclusive, and quality education while addressing barriers to attendance, retention, and learning outcomes.
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION & ACHIEVEMENTS
Pure Hands delivers its emergency education mission through a rapid, child-centered approach that ensures immediate access to safe, inclusive, and protective learning environments for children and youth affected by conflict, displacement, and other crises. Interventions focus on out-of-school children, displaced students, returnees, and children with disabilities, providing essential teaching and learning materials, school supplies, and textbooks, as well as teacher support to promote continuity of learning, attendance, and retention.
Emergency education activities also include inclusive support for children with disabilities, provision of assistive devices, seasonal support such as winter clothing, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) sessions, school meals or snacks in coordination with WFP, and protection mechanisms to mitigate risks, including gender-based violence within learning environments. All interventions are guided by humanitarian principles, protection, gender equality, disability inclusion, and conflict sensitivity, ensuring that crisis-affected children and youth have safe, equitable, and continued access to education during emergencies.
What We Do: Our Key Activities
Distributing school supplies, textbooks, and learning materials to students.
Providing educational scholarships and grants to vulnerable students, especially girls.
Implementing inclusive education programs for children with disabilities.
Providing winter clothing and seasonal support to students in need.
Providing children with disabilities with assistive devices (hearing devices, walking sticks, wheelchairs, eyeglasses, etc.).
Providing of mental health and psychosocial support sessions (MHPSS) and hygiene awareness.
Coordination & Distribution for the dedicated Meal / Snack in coordination and cooperation with WFP.
Supporting protection mechanism to mitigate risks including GBV risks in learning environment.

Mobile Classroom
Security and weather conditions hinder access to education by creating unsafe conditions for students. To protect the children and keep them in school, we are building closed and secure classrooms. With $ 7,750, we can establish a mobile classroom in an IDP camp.
