Food Security, livelihoods and Agriculture

PROGRAM OVERVIEW & CONTEXT

The Issue: The Challenge We Face

While data are limited, show that before the crisis agriculture was the main source of income for 73 percent of the population, despite its limited contribution to meeting food needs. Most farms are small and generate low incomes, with agricultural productivity stagnating because of barriers to profitability, a decline in the number and size of smallholder plots and declining water availability.

Before the current crisis, Yemen’s agricultural system was relatively sustainable, but inappropriate development policies, poor governance, conflict, climate change and degradation of natural resources have undermined food systems, diminished purchasing power, and entrenched reliance on imports, leaving households vulnerable to global market fluctuations.

With national social protection systems broken, the people most at risk of food insecurity rely on humanitarian assistance and safety nets provided by United Nations entities and non-governmental organizations, often engaging in harmful coping strategies to meet food needs.

Our Approach

Goals & Objectives

Main Objective: Restoring and strengthening livelihoods and food systems through support to agriculture, market-based recovery, and sustainable practices that enhance household food security and resilience.

Objective 1: Enable food‑insecure households to access temporary employment opportunities to strengthen community resilience through the linkage of Cash‑for‑Work activities to livelihood restoration and recovery.
Objective 2: Support smallholder farmers communities with inputs, tools, and rehabilitated assets to restore production capacity.
Objective 3: Enhance food systems by improving access to stable markets and strengthening resilience through climate-smart practices.
Objective 4: Provide food-insecure households with training, start-up grants, and market linkages to diversify household income sources and reduce dependency on food aid.

Food Basket

We focus a majority of our operations on the distribution of nutritious food baskets to bring immediate relief to Yemenis suffering from fatally acute malnutrition. These food baskets include a combination of powerful vitamins and minerals to help directly treat a malnourished body.

Fresh Bread

In Islam, bread is not considered as just a basic food, but a highly respected source of nutrition and blessings too. Our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) mentions that “The best of your foods is bread” due to its sheer ability to take care of a man’s body. To families who don’t know where their next meal will come from, we’ve made it our mission to make fresh bread accessible to them. The bread we supply is whole wheat which contains calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and vitamin B12.
