#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
Yemen has now reported its first Coronavirus deaths. Aid groups fear there is more widespread transmission of the virus than the current scant testing shows. Extreme concern is mounting of a catastrophic outbreak in a country that’s considered one of the world’s most vulnerable environments.
The war-ravaged country has extremely limited capacity to test in order to track the spread of the virus or to adequately treat those who catch it. As of last week, only about 170 tests had been carried out among a population of 30 million.
Other diseases including cholera, dengue and malaria are rife and only half of the hospitals are fully functional. According to the World Health Organization, only 45% of the 3,507 facilities contacted in 16 out of Yemen’s 22 provinces reported that they were fully functioning and accessible.
A country that has been ravaged by years of war does not have the capacity to fight against the virus. Many people are struggling to find food, clean drinking water and basic preventative necessities to protect themselves. According to the UN, two million people are malnourished across Yemen.
Together, we can make a difference.
Together, we can save lives.
Pure Hands is collecting donations for a Pandemic Kit that will give basic protection such as surgical masks, as well as food and water supply. Please donate generously to the people of Yemen. They need our support now more than ever.
