The Fight Against Famine In Yemen
Statement
Yemen, a Middle Eastern country located in the Arabian Peninsula, is now enduring one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world. Sources like UNICEF have reported that “… 80% of the population, over 24 million people, were in need of humanitarian assistance” (UNICEF, 2020) The world has not yet witnessed in its recent history a devastating humanitarian crisis like such. Yemenis are also by large victims of a Civil War that has raged for the past five years. Bombardments have left the country with almost no infrastructure and most hospitals destroyed. Air/ sea ports have also been sieged not allowing food, medicine, and resources to reach those in need and in risk. The coronavirus pandemic coupled with famine and war has increased the death toll amongst children, women and the elderly. The UN’s humanitarian chief has reported that “… a child under the age of five dies every 10 minutes of preventable causes”(O’Brien’s, 2019).
